Serkis was born and brought up in Ruislip, Middlesex, England. He is best known for playing Gollum by providing the voice and movements for the CGI character in The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy (2001–2003). In the 2005 version of King Kong by Peter Jackson (who also directed Lord of the Rings) he also provided the movements for that movie's CGI version of King Kong, as well as playing Lumpy the Cook. He has played over 30 other roles in film and television productions throughout his career.
